Barrier Methods

What they do: Physically stop sperm from reaching the egg, thereby preventing pregnancy.

  • Condom

What it is: A thin sheath that covers the penis, trapping semen inside.

Pros: Cheap, and easy to use.  Latex condoms are the only form of birth control that protect against sexually transmitted infections.

Cons: Have to interrupt the moment to use one.  Can tear, rip or fall off.

Effectiveness: 88-90%, up to 98% effective if used with spermicide.

  • Diaphragm

What it is: A latex shield inserted in the vagina to block sperm.

Pros: Must remain in the vagina for six hours after sex, so you can have sex as often as you want during that time.

Cons: Must be fitted for one by a doctor.  Insert it an hour before intercourse and use with contraceptive jelly.  Can be messy.

Side-effects: None

Effectiveness: 92-96% with a spermicide
